Trisul (BVMF:TRIS3) has had a rough month with its share price down 8.2%. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. In this article, we decided to focus on Trisul's ROE.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Is ROE Calculated?

ROE can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Trisul is:

14% = R$171m ÷ R$1.2b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

The 'return' is the yearly profit. That means that for every R$1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated R$0.14 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

A Side By Side comparison of Trisul's Earnings Growth And 14% ROE

When you first look at it, Trisul's ROE doesn't look that attractive. However, given that the company's ROE is similar to the average industry ROE of 14%, we may spare it some thought. Looking at Trisul's exceptional 54% five-year net income growth in particular, we are definitely impressed. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Trisul's growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 11% in the same period, which is great to see.

The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is Trisul fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.

Is Trisul Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

Trisul's ' three-year median payout ratio is on the lower side at 22% implying that it is retaining a higher percentage (78%) of its profits. This suggests that the management is reinvesting most of the profits to grow the business as evidenced by the growth seen by the company.

Moreover, Trisul is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years.
