bpost NV/SA (EBR:BPOST) Surges 44% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

bpost NV/SA (EBR:BPOST) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 44% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 26% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, bpost/SA's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Logistics industry in Belgium, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.8x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How bpost/SA Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, bpost/SA has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think bpost/SA's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as bpost/SA's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 6.1%. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.3% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 13% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that bpost/SA's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On bpost/SA's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift bpost/SA's P/S close to the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of bpost/SA's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware bpost/SA is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is potentially serious.
