K&S (ASX:KSC) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To A$0.08
The board of K&S Corporation Limited (ASX:KSC) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of A$0.08 on the 3rd of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield 7.2%, which is above the industry average.

K&S' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, K&S' dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 73% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 8.5% if the company continues along the path it has been on recently. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 82%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was A$0.13, compared to the most recent full-year payment of A$0.18. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 3.3% per annum over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
K&S Could Grow Its Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. K&S has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 8.5% per annum. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.
Our Thoughts On K&S' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
