Dusk Group Limited's (ASX:DSK) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Dusk Group's (ASX:DSK) stock is up by a considerable 14% over the past week. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Specifically, we decided to study Dusk Group's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Dusk Group is:
14% = AU$4.4m ÷ AU$32m (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
The 'return' is the yearly profit. So, this means that for every A$1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of A$0.14.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Dusk Group's Earnings Growth And 14% ROE
At first glance, Dusk Group seems to have a decent ROE. And on comparing with the industry, we found that the the average industry ROE is similar at 14%. However, while Dusk Group has a pretty respectable ROE, its five year net income decline rate was 26% . We reckon that there could be some other factors at play here that are preventing the company's growth. Such as, the company pays out a huge portion of its earnings as dividends, or is faced with competitive pressures.
So, as a next step, we compared Dusk Group's performance against the industry and were disappointed to discover that while the company has been shrinking its earnings, the industry has been growing its earnings at a rate of 1.3% over the last few years.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is Dusk Group fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
Is Dusk Group Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Dusk Group's declining earnings is not surprising given how the company is spending most of its profits in paying dividends, judging by its three-year median payout ratio of 67% (or a retention ratio of 33%). With only very little left to reinvest into the business, growth in earnings is far from likely. To know the 2 risks we have identified for Dusk Group visit our risks dashboard for free.
In addition, Dusk Group has been paying dividends over a period of five years suggesting that keeping up dividend payments is preferred by the management even though earnings have been in decline. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company over the next three years is expected to be approximately 71%. Still, forecasts suggest that Dusk Group's future ROE will rise to 25% even though the the company's payout ratio is not expected to change by much.
Summary
In total, it does look like Dusk Group has some positive aspects to its business. Although, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a high ROE. Bear in mind, the company reinvests a small portion of its profits, which means that investors aren't reaping the benefits of the high rate of return. With that said, we studied the latest analyst forecasts and found that while the company has shrunk its earnings in the past, analysts expect its earnings to grow in the future.
