REA Group Insiders Sell AU$7.8m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Over the past year, many REA Group Limited (ASX:REA) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
REA Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the CEO & Executive Director, Owen Wilson, sold AU$3.6m worth of shares at a price of AU$248 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of AU$242. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Insider Ownership
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. REA Group insiders own about AU$122m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
