Possible Turnaround For Viking Mines Insiders, Still Down AU$183k

Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased AU$915.0k worth of Viking Mines Limited (ASX:VKA) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 14% over the past week. The purchase, however, has proven to be a pricey bet, with losses currently totalling AU$183k.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Viking Mines Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Non-Executive Director Bevan Nigel Tarratt bought AU$915k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.01 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than AU$0.008 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Bevan Nigel Tarratt was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 15% of Viking Mines shares, worth about AU$1.7m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
