Perenti's (ASX:PRN) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

The board of Perenti Limited (ASX:PRN) has announced that the dividend on 30th of October will be increased to A$0.0425, which will be 6.3% higher than last year's payment of A$0.04 which covered the same period. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 2.6%.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Perenti's stock price has increased by 68% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Perenti's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Perenti's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 97.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was A$0.02 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was A$0.0725. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 14% over that duration. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. We are encouraged to see that Perenti has grown earnings per share at 30% per year over the past five years. Perenti is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.

We Really Like Perenti's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Perenti is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
