Last week, Nufarm Limited (ASX:NUF) insiders, who had purchased shares in the previous 12 months were rewarded handsomely. The shares increased by 6.4% last week, resulting in a AU$106m increase in the company's market worth. As a result, the stock they originally bought for AU$1.2m is now worth AU$1.3m.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Nufarm Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Non-Executive Chairman John Gillam made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$746k worth of shares at a price of AU$4.07 each. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of AU$4.67. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Nufarm insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. What Might The Insider Transactions At Nufarm Tell Us?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses.
