Austral Gold Limited's (ASX:AGD) Shares Bounce 42% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Austral Gold Limited (ASX:AGD) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 42% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 88% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Austral Gold's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Metals and Mining industry in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 59.6x and even P/S above 292x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Austral Gold's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
For instance, Austral Gold's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Austral Gold will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Austral Gold's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 26%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 49% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 256% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this in mind, we understand why Austral Gold's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Key Takeaway
Even after such a strong price move, Austral Gold's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Austral Gold revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
