Market forces rained on the parade of VERBUND AG (VIE:VER) shareholders today, when the analysts downgraded their forecasts for this year. This report focused on revenue estimates, and it looks as though the consensus view of the business has become substantially more conservative.

Following the downgrade, the consensus from eight analysts covering VERBUND is for revenues of €8.4b in 2024, implying a not inconsiderable 8.8% decline in sales compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are anticipated to plummet 24% to €4.89 in the same period. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €9.6b and earnings per share (EPS) of €4.91 in 2024. Indeed we can see that the consensus opinion has undergone some fundamental changes following the recent consensus updates, with a substantial drop in revenues and some minor tweaks to earnings numbers.

One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 8.8% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 31% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 0.2% per year. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - VERBUND is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that there's been no major change in sentiment, with analysts reconfirming that earnings per share are expected to continue performing in line with their prior expectations. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Overall, given the drastic downgrade to this year's forecasts, we'd be feeling a little more wary of VERBUND going forwards.
