Did You Manage To Avoid CubeSmart's (NYSE:CUBE) 17% Share Price Drop?

It's nice to see the CubeSmart (NYSE:CUBE) share price up 24% in a week. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. In fact, the price has declined 17% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Unfortunately CubeSmart reported an EPS drop of 0.2% for the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 17% share price fall. Unsurprisingly, given the lack of EPS growth, the market seems to be more cautious about the stock.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, CubeSmart's TSR for the last year was -15%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that CubeSmart shareholders are down 15% for the year (even including dividends) . Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 9.6%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 5.7% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for CubeSmart you should be aware of.
