Did Business Growth Power Aegis Logistics' (NSE:AEGISCHEM) Share Price Gain of 148%?
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For instance, the price of Aegis Logistics Limited (NSE:AEGISCHEM) stock is up an impressive 148% over the last five years. On top of that, the share price is up 20% in about a quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 22% in the last three months.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Aegis Logistics' earnings per share are down 8.6% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We doubt the modest 0.8% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. In contrast revenue growth of 22% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Aegis Logistics is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Aegis Logistics, it has a TSR of 156% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Aegis Logistics shareholders gained a total return of 2.9% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 21% a year, over half a decade) look better. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
