A Look At GTL Infrastructure's (NSE:GTLINFRA) Share Price Returns

GTL Infrastructure Limited (NSE:GTLINFRA) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 150% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 89% in that time. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround.

We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

GTL Infrastructure isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that GTL Infrastructure shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 67% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 11% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - GTL Infrastructure has 2 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of companies we expect will grow earnings.

Gold miners still look inexpensive because the market thinks we're near the top of the cycle. Given what's happening to the dollar, I'm not so sure.

Is it a safer bet on gold to have just exposure to ETFs?

Between 2003 and 2011, gold nearly went 5x. Dollar went weak too. The gold companies did bad. It is worth noting that between 2003 and 2011, there was 2008! I will leave it your inference and research.
