Omnia Holdings' (JSE:OMN) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock climbs 8.9% this past week

The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers So we wouldn't blame long term Omnia Holdings Limited (JSE:OMN) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 58% over a half decade. On the other hand the share price has bounced 8.9% over the last week. But this could be related to the strong market, with stocks up around 5.9% in the same time.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the five years over which the share price declined, Omnia Holdings' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 6.7% each year. Readers should note that the share price has fallen faster than the EPS, at a rate of 16% per year, over the period. This implies that the market was previously too optimistic about the stock.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Omnia Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was -29%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Omnia Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 63% over one year. And that does include the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 5% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Omnia Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Omnia Holdings (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
