If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Anglo American Platinum (JSE:AMS) Before It's Too Late
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Anglo American Platinum (JSE:AMS). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Anglo American Platinum Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In the last three years Anglo American Platinum's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Anglo American Platinum's EPS shot from R116 to R301, over the last year. Year on year growth of 160% is certainly a sight to behold. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Anglo American Platinum shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 35% to 48%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Anglo American Platinum Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I always like to check up on CEO compensation, because I think that reasonable pay levels, around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Anglo American Platinum, with market caps over R117b, is about R43m.
The Anglo American Platinum CEO received R29m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Should You Add Anglo American Platinum To Your Watchlist?
Anglo American Platinum's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. Such fast EPS growth makes me wonder if the business has hit an inflection point (and I mean the good kind.) Meanwhile, the very reasonable CEO pay reassures me a little, since it points to an absence profligacy. So Anglo American Platinum looks like it could be a good quality growth stock, at first glance. That's worth watching. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Anglo American Platinum (including 1 which is significant) .
