Here's Why We Think Anglo American Platinum (JSE:AMS) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Anglo American Platinum (JSE:AMS). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Anglo American Platinum with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is Anglo American Platinum Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Over the last three years, Anglo American Platinum has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Outstandingly, Anglo American Platinum's EPS shot from R116 to R301, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 160%. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Anglo American Platinum shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 35% to 48%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

While we live in the present moment, there's little doubt that the future matters most in the investment decision process. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for Anglo American Platinum?
Are Anglo American Platinum Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
As a general rule, it's worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalisations over R136b, like Anglo American Platinum, the median CEO pay is around R48m.
The Anglo American Platinum CEO received R29m in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Is Anglo American Platinum Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Anglo American Platinum's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. Such fast EPS growth prompts the question: has the business reached an inflection point? What's more, the fact that the CEO's compensation is quite reasonable is a sign that the company is conscious of excessive spending. It will definitely require further research to be sure, but it does seem that Anglo American Platinum has the hallmarks of a quality business; and that would make it well worth watching.
