Here's Why We Think AH-Vest (JSE:AHL) Is Well Worth Watching

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like AH-Vest (JSE:AHL). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

AH-Vest's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, AH-Vest has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a falcon taking flight, AH-Vest's EPS soared from R0.058 to R0.08, over the last year. That's a commendable gain of 37%.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note AH-Vest's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 11% to R196m. That's progress.

AH-Vest isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of R51m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are AH-Vest Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalizations under R3.0b, like AH-Vest, the median CEO pay is around R4.7m.

The CEO of AH-Vest was paid just R345k in total compensation for the year ending . This could be considered a token amount, and indicates that the company does not need to use payment to motivate the CEO - that is often a good sign. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Does AH-Vest Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, AH-Vest's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. With swiftly growing earnings, it probably has its best days ahead, and the modest CEO pay suggests the company is careful with cash. So I'd argue this is the kind of stock worth watching, even if it isn't great value today. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for AH-Vest (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
