AH-Vest Limited (JSE:AHL) Shares Fly 30% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

AH-Vest Limited (JSE:AHL) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 30% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 19% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in South Africa have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 11x, you may still consider AH-Vest as a highly attractive investment with its 3.3x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

AH-Vest certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, AH-Vest would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 172% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 61% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 18% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's understandable that AH-Vest's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On AH-Vest's P/E

Shares in AH-Vest are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of AH-Vest revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
