African Equity Empowerment Investments' (JSE:AEE) Stock Price Has Reduced 79% In The Past Three Years
African Equity Empowerment Investments Limited (JSE:AEE) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 83% in the last month. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Regrettably, the share price slid 79% in that period. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
African Equity Empowerment Investments became profitable within the last five years. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.
We note that the dividend seems healthy enough, so that probably doesn't explain the share price drop. We like that African Equity Empowerment Investments has actually grown its revenue over the last three years. But it's not clear to us why the share price is down. It might be worth diving deeper into the fundamentals, lest an opportunity goes begging.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of African Equity Empowerment Investments, it has a TSR of -66% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that African Equity Empowerment Investments has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 136% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 3% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand African Equity Empowerment Investments better, we need to consider many other factors.
