WEC Energy Group (NYSE:WEC) shareholders have earned a 37% return over the last year
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the WEC Energy Group, Inc. (NYSE:WEC) share price is up 32% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 15% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 10% in the last three years.
Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
WEC Energy Group was able to grow EPS by 12% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 32% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of WEC Energy Group, it has a TSR of 37% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that WEC Energy Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 37% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 6% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand WEC Energy Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - WEC Energy Group has 2 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
