TXNM Energy (NYSE:TXNM) Is Experiencing Growth In Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at TXNM Energy (NYSE:TXNM) so let's look a bit deeper.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for TXNM Energy:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.047 = US$447m ÷ (US$11b - US$1.8b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
So, TXNM Energy has an ROCE of 4.7%. On its own that's a low return on capital but it's in line with the industry's average returns of 5.1%.

In the above chart we have measured TXNM Energy's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering TXNM Energy for free.
The Trend Of ROCE
While in absolute terms it isn't a high ROCE, it's promising to see that it has been moving in the right direction. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 4.7%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 49% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at TXNM Energy thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, it's great to see that TXNM Energy can compound returns by consistently reinvesting capital at increasing rates of return, because these are some of the key ingredients of those highly sought after multi-baggers. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 66% return over the last five years. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
