Evergy Insiders Sell US$4.3m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
The fact that multiple Evergy, Inc. (NASDAQ:EVRG) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Evergy
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Kevin Bryant, sold US$3.0m worth of shares at a price of US$62.93 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$65.17). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 100% of Kevin Bryant's holding.

Does Evergy Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Evergy insiders own about US$32m worth of shares. That equates to 0.2% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
