There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About U-Haul Holding's (NYSE:UHAL) Returns On Capital

What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Having said that, from a first glance at U-Haul Holding (NYSE:UHAL) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on U-Haul Holding is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.04 = US$773m ÷ (US$20b - US$964m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Therefore, U-Haul Holding has an ROCE of 4.0%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Transportation industry average of 7.5%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

Unfortunately, the trend isn't great with ROCE falling from 5.3% five years ago, while capital employed has grown 62%. That being said, U-Haul Holding raised some capital prior to their latest results being released, so that could partly explain the increase in capital employed. U-Haul Holding probably hasn't received a full year of earnings yet from the new funds it raised, so these figures should be taken with a grain of salt.

The Bottom Line On U-Haul Holding's ROCE

In summary, U-Haul Holding is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Investors must think there's better things to come because the stock has knocked it out of the park, delivering a 102% gain to shareholders who have held over the last five years. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.

Like most companies, U-Haul Holding does come with some risks, and we've found 2 warning signs that you should be aware of.
