The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. That downside risk was realized by Marten Transport, Ltd. (NASDAQ:MRTN) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 21%. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 26%. Longer term shareholders haven't suffered as badly, since the stock is down a comparatively less painful 1.9% in three years.

After losing 7.2% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unfortunately Marten Transport reported an EPS drop of 60% for the last year. The share price fall of 21% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared.

On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. A Different Perspective

Investors in Marten Transport had a tough year, with a total loss of 19% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
