The Market Lifts Globus Maritime Limited (NASDAQ:GLBS) Shares 38% But It Can Do More

Globus Maritime Limited (NASDAQ:GLBS) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 38% gain in the last month alone. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 14% is also fairly reasonable.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Globus Maritime's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Shipping industry in the United States, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Globus Maritime's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Globus Maritime has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Globus Maritime's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 18% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 45% drop in revenue in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest revenue growth will be highly resilient over the next year growing by 19%. That would be an excellent outcome when the industry is expected to decline by 5.9%.

With this information, we find it odd that Globus Maritime is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the contrarian forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Globus Maritime's P/S?

Globus Maritime appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Globus Maritime currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its growth forecasts are potentially beating a struggling industry. Given the glowing revenue forecasts, we can only assume potential risks are what might be capping the P/S ratio at its current levels. One such risk is that the company may not live up to analysts' revenue trajectories in tough industry conditions. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
