Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 19% in the last month. But over the last year the share price has taken off like one of Elon Musk's rockets. In fact, it is up 347% in that time. So it is not that surprising to see the stock retrace a little. The real question is whether the fundamental business performance can justify the strong increase over the long term.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year, Sify Technologies actually saw its earnings per share drop 33%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

Revenue was pretty stable on last year, so deeper research might be needed to explain the share price rise.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Sify Technologies will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Sify Technologies has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 347% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 27% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
