Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By ATN International, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ATNI) 29% Share Price Plunge
ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 29% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 24% share price drop.
Following the heavy fall in price, ATN International may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Telecom industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.3x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How ATN International Has Been Performing
There hasn't been much to differentiate ATN International's and the industry's retreating revenue lately. It might be that many expect the company's revenue performance to degrade further, which has repressed the P/S. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. In saying that, existing shareholders may feel hopeful about the share price if the company's revenue continues tracking the industry.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ATN International's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 1.0% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 39% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 0.02% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 65%.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that ATN International's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What Does ATN International's P/S Mean For Investors?
ATN International's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Telecom companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of ATN International's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
