PAR Technology (NYSE:PAR) Is Carrying A Fair Bit Of Debt
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that PAR Technology Corporation (NYSE:PAR) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is PAR Technology's Net Debt?
As you can see below, at the end of June 2022, PAR Technology had US$388.5m of debt, up from US$279.8m a year ago. Click the image for more detail. However, it also had US$150.6m in cash, and so its net debt is US$237.9m.
A Look At PAR Technology's Liabilities
According to the last reported balance sheet, PAR Technology had liabilities of US$61.6m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$402.1m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$150.6m as well as receivables valued at US$60.7m due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$252.3m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
PAR Technology has a market capitalization of US$680.2m, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine PAR Technology's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Over 12 months, PAR Technology reported revenue of US$325m, which is a gain of 37%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. With any luck the company will be able to grow its way to profitability.
Caveat Emptor
Even though PAR Technology managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. Indeed, it lost US$54m at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through US$59m of cash over the last year. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for PAR Technology you should be aware of.
