The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.

Following the downgrade, the most recent consensus for Coherent from its 16 analysts is for revenues of US$5.0b in 2024 which, if met, would be a modest 3.2% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Per-share losses are expected to see a sharp uptick, reaching US$1.32. Prior to this update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$5.8b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.49 in 2024. So we can see that the consensus has become notably more bearish on Coherent's outlook with these numbers, making a measurable cut to next year's revenue estimates. Furthermore, they expect the business to be loss-making next year, compared to their previous forecasts of a profit.

The consensus price target fell 26% to US$42.50, with the analysts clearly concerned about the company following the weaker revenue and earnings outlook. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Coherent at US$85.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$29.00. We would probably assign less value to the forecasts in this situation, because such a wide range of estimates could imply that the future of this business is difficult to value accurately. As a result it might not be possible to derive much meaning from the consensus price target, which is after all just an average of this wide range of estimates.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Coherent's revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2024 expected to display 2.6% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 28% over the past five years. Compare this against other companies (with analyst forecasts) in the industry, which are in aggregate expected to see revenue growth of 5.9% annually. So it's pretty clear that, while revenue growth is expected to slow down, the wider industry is also expected to grow faster than Coherent.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts are expecting Coherent to become unprofitable next year. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Given the scope of the downgrades, it would not be a surprise to see the market become more wary of the business.
