The total return for Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last three years
It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Trimble Inc. (NASDAQ:TRMB) share price down 17% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been pleasing. In the last three years the share price is up, 35%: better than the market.
In light of the stock dropping 11% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive three-year return.
Our analysis indicates that TRMB is potentially undervalued!
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During three years of share price growth, Trimble achieved compound earnings per share growth of 18% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 11% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 22% in the twelve months, Trimble shareholders did even worse, losing 35%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Trimble .
