The total return for OSI Systems (NASDAQ:OSIS) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last three years
One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. For example, the OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS) share price is up 91% in the last three years, clearly besting the market return of around 17% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 38% in the last year.
Although OSI Systems has shed US$187m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During three years of share price growth, OSI Systems achieved compound earnings per share growth of 20% per year. We don't think it is entirely coincidental that the EPS growth is reasonably close to the 24% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that sentiment and expectations have not changed drastically. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that OSI Systems shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 38% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 12% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand OSI Systems better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that OSI Systems is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those are concerning...
