Insiders Re-Evaluate Their US$650.9k Stock Purchase As Lantronix Falls To US$95m

The recent price decline of 17% in Lantronix, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:LTRX) stock may have disappointed insiders who bought US$650.9k worth of shares at an average price of US$2.88 in the past 12 months. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only US$487.8k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Lantronix

The President Saleel Awsare made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$213k worth of shares at a price of US$2.66 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$2.16 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

While Lantronix insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insiders At Lantronix Have Bought Stock Recently

Over the last quarter, Lantronix insiders have spent a meaningful amount on shares. Overall, four insiders shelled out US$156k for shares in the company -- and none sold. This is a positive in our book as it implies some confidence.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 5.7% of Lantronix shares, worth about US$5.4m, according to our data. Whilst better than nothing, we're not overly impressed by these holdings.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Lantronix Insiders?

It is good to see recent purchasing. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. While the overall levels of insider ownership are below what we'd like to see, the history of transactions imply that Lantronix insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
