Focus Universal Inc. (NASDAQ:FCUV) insiders who purchased shares in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The stock climbed by 10% resulting in a US$2.2m addition to the company’s market value. As a result, their original purchase of US$54.5k worth of stock is now worth US$112.7k.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Focus Universal

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Founder Desheng Wang bought US$54k worth of shares at a price of US$0.19 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$0.37), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does Focus Universal Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Focus Universal insiders own about US$14m worth of shares (which is 61% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Focus Universal Insiders?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. Along with the high insider ownership, this analysis suggests that insiders are quite bullish about Focus Universal. One for the watchlist, at least! While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Our analysis shows 5 warning signs for Focus Universal (4 are a bit concerning!) and we strongly recommend you look at these before investing.
