Here's Why Clearfield (NASDAQ:CLFD) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Clearfield (NASDAQ:CLFD), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Clearfield Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Clearfield has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Impressively, Clearfield's EPS catapulted from US$2.01 to US$3.50, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 74%. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Clearfield achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 86% to US$306m. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are Clearfield Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that Clearfield insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$128m. This totals to 15% of shares in the company. Enough to lead management's decision making process down a path that brings the most benefit to shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalisations between US$400m and US$1.6b, like Clearfield, the median CEO pay is around US$3.6m.

Clearfield offered total compensation worth US$2.0m to its CEO in the year to September 2022. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Should You Add Clearfield To Your Watchlist?

Clearfield's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The drastic earnings growth indicates the business is going from strength to strength. Hopefully a trend that continues well into the future. Clearfield is certainly doing some things right and is well worth investigating. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Clearfield has 2 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
