It's Down 26% But PowerFleet, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIOT) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

PowerFleet, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIOT) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think PowerFleet's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Electronic industry is similar at about 2.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does PowerFleet's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times have been advantageous for PowerFleet as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this level of performance to taper off, keeping the P/S from soaring. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

PowerFleet's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 119% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 133% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 43% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 18% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we find it interesting that PowerFleet is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From PowerFleet's P/S?

Following PowerFleet's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, PowerFleet's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
