With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.6x Riskified Ltd. (NYSE:RSKD) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.2x and even P/S higher than 10x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Riskified's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Riskified has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Riskified's Revenue Growth Trending?

Riskified's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 16%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 73% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 12% during the coming year according to the six analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 15%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Riskified is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does Riskified's P/S Mean For Investors?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Riskified's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
