After Leaping 32% Fastly, Inc. (NYSE:FSLY) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar
Fastly, Inc. (NYSE:FSLY) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 32% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 70% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Fastly is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 6.3x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' IT industry have P/S ratios below 2x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Fastly Has Been Performing
Recent times have been advantageous for Fastly as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Fastly's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 19% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 82% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 18% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that Fastly's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
The strong share price surge has lead to Fastly's P/S soaring as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Fastly's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
