Institutional owners may consider drastic measures as Salesforce, Inc.'s (NYSE:CRM) recent US$7.9b drop adds to long-term losses
To get a sense of who is truly in control of Salesforce, Inc. (NYSE:CRM), it is important to understand the ownership structure of the business. And the group that holds the biggest piece of the pie are institutions with 79% ownership. In other words, the group stands to gain the most (or lose the most) from their investment into the company.
As a result, institutional investors endured the highest losses last week after market cap fell by US$7.9b. Needless to say, the recent loss which further adds to the one-year loss to shareholders of 43% might not go down well especially with this category of shareholders. Institutions or "liquidity providers" control large sums of money and therefore, these types of investors usually have a lot of influence over stock price movements. As a result, if the downtrend continues, institutions may face pressures to sell Salesforce, which might have negative implications on individual investors.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Salesforce?
Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.
We can see that Salesforce does have institutional investors; and they hold a good portion of the company's stock. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. When multiple institutions own a stock, there's always a risk that they are in a 'crowded trade'. When such a trade goes wrong, multiple parties may compete to sell stock fast. Investors should note that institutions actually own more than half the company, so they can collectively wield significant power. Hedge funds don't have many shares in Salesforce. The company's largest shareholder is The Vanguard Group, Inc., with ownership of 7.9%. For context, the second largest shareholder holds about 6.9% of the shares outstanding, followed by an ownership of 4.7% by the third-largest shareholder. Furthermore, CEO Marc Benioff is the owner of 2.8% of the company's shares.

Insider Ownership Of Salesforce
