TeraWulf (NASDAQ:WULF) Is Making Moderate Use Of Debt

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We can see that TeraWulf Inc. (NASDAQ:WULF) does use debt in its business. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is TeraWulf's Net Debt?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of December 2024 TeraWulf had US$487.5m of debt, an increase on US$125.3m, over one year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$274.1m, its net debt is less, at about US$213.4m.

How Healthy Is TeraWulf's Balance Sheet?

According to the last reported balance sheet, TeraWulf had liabilities of US$51.8m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$491.2m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had US$274.1m in cash and US$3.80m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$265.2m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This deficit isn't so bad because TeraWulf is worth US$1.26b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if TeraWulf can strengthen its balance sheet over time. Caveat Emptor

Even though TeraWulf managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. Indeed, it lost US$53m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled US$292m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example TeraWulf has 3 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
