Stock Analysis

SPS Commerce (NASDAQ:SPSC) sheds 4.2% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth

While SPS Commerce, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPSC) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 26% in the last quarter. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. Unfortunately its return of 45% is below the market return of 96%. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 44% drop, in the last year.

While the stock has fallen 4.2% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, SPS Commerce achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 15% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 8% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 19% in the last year, SPS Commerce shareholders lost 44%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. Is SPS Commerce cheap compared to other companies?
