The Trend Of High Returns At Fortinet (NASDAQ:FTNT) Has Us Very Interested
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Fortinet's (NASDAQ:FTNT) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Fortinet:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.32 = US$1.2b ÷ (US$7.5b - US$3.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
Therefore, Fortinet has an ROCE of 32%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 7.7% earned by companies in a similar industry.

So How Is Fortinet's ROCE Trending?
Fortinet is displaying some positive trends. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 32%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 132%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that Fortinet has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 49%, which we'd consider pretty high. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line On Fortinet's ROCE
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what Fortinet has. And a remarkable 321% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Fortinet can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
