The Trend Of High Returns At Fortinet (NASDAQ:FTNT) Has Us Very Interested
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. And in light of that, the trends we're seeing at Fortinet's (NASDAQ:FTNT) look very promising so lets take a look.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Fortinet:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.29 = US$1.2b ÷ (US$7.5b - US$3.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
So, Fortinet has an ROCE of 29%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Software industry average of 8.9%.

What Can We Tell From Fortinet's ROCE Trend?
We like the trends that we're seeing from Fortinet. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 29%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 167%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
On a side note, Fortinet's current liabilities are still rather high at 47% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
The Bottom Line On Fortinet's ROCE
All in all, it's terrific to see that Fortinet is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. And a remarkable 257% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
