Viant Technology's (NASDAQ:DSP) Solid Earnings Are Supported By Other Strong Factors

Viant Technology Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DSP) earnings announcement last week was disappointing for investors, despite the decent profit numbers. Our analysis says that investors should be optimistic, as the strong profit is built on solid foundations.

A Closer Look At Viant Technology's Earnings

Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

Viant Technology has an accrual ratio of -0.34 for the year to March 2026. Therefore, its statutory earnings were very significantly less than its free cashflow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of US$41m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of US$9.09m. Viant Technology shareholders are no doubt pleased that free cash flow improved over the last twelve months. However, we can see that a recent tax benefit, along with unusual items, have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore its accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

Viant Technology's profit was reduced by unusual items worth US$7.7m in the last twelve months, and this helped it produce high cash conversion, as reflected by its unusual items. In a scenario where those unusual items included non-cash charges, we'd expect to see a strong accrual ratio, which is exactly what has happened in this case. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. In the twelve months to March 2026, Viant Technology had a big unusual items expense. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.

An Unusual Tax Situation

Moving on from the accrual ratio, we note that Viant Technology profited from a tax benefit which contributed US$14m to profit. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth.

Our Take On Viant Technology's Profit Performance

In conclusion, both Viant Technology's accrual ratio and its unusual items suggest that its statutory earnings are probably reasonably conservative, but the presence of a tax benefits may be inflating the numbers in a way that won't persist. Looking at all these factors, we'd say that Viant Technology's underlying earnings power is at least as good as the statutory numbers would make it seem. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Viant Technology at this point in time. While conducting our analysis, we found that Viant Technology has 1 warning sign and it would be unwise to ignore this.

After our examination into the nature of Viant Technology's profit, we've come away optimistic for the company. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae.
