AvePoint Insiders Selling US$686k In Stock Relieved As Market Cap Slides To US$3.3b
Over the past year, insiders sold US$686k worth of AvePoint, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVPT) stock at an average price of US$9.81 per share allowing them to get the most out of their money. The company’s market cap plunged by US$448m after price dropped by 12% last week but insiders were able to limit their loss to an extent.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AvePoint
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chief Financial Officer, James Caci, for US$362k worth of shares, at about US$9.12 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$17.05. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 8.6% of James Caci's holding.
In the last year AvePoint insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership Of AvePoint
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that AvePoint insiders own 37% of the company, worth about US$1.2b. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
So What Do The AvePoint Insider Transactions Indicate?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the AvePoint insiders selling. Of course, the future is what matters most.
