The QuickLogic Corporation (NASDAQ:QUIK) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 34%. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 27% over that time.

Following the firm bounce in price, QuickLogic may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.8x, since almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.2x and even P/S lower than 1.7x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does QuickLogic's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

QuickLogic could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance will improve markedly. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as QuickLogic's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 23% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 91% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 13% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 39%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that QuickLogic's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What Does QuickLogic's P/S Mean For Investors?

The strong share price surge has lead to QuickLogic's P/S soaring as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've concluded that QuickLogic currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its forecast growth is lower than the wider industry. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. At these price levels, investors should remain cautious, particularly if things don't improve.
