Does QUALCOMM (NASDAQ:QCOM) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in QUALCOMM (NASDAQ:QCOM). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

QUALCOMM's Improving Profits
Over the last three years, QUALCOMM has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. QUALCOMM's EPS skyrocketed from US$7.08 to US$9.96, in just one year; a result that's bound to bring a smile to shareholders. That's a commendable gain of 41%.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. QUALCOMM shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 30% to 33%, and revenue is growing. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are QUALCOMM Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Owing to the size of QUALCOMM, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$152m. We note that this amounts to 0.1% of the company, which may be small owing to the sheer size of QUALCOMM but it's still worth mentioning. So despite their percentage holding being low, company management still have plenty of reasons to deliver the best outcomes for investors.
Is QUALCOMM Worth Keeping An Eye On?
For growth investors, QUALCOMM's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. With EPS growth rates like that, it's hardly surprising to see company higher-ups place confidence in the company through continuing to hold a significant investment. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. Don't forget that there may still be risks. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for QUALCOMM (1 is a bit concerning) you should be aware of.
