Little Excitement Around Kopin Corporation's (NASDAQ:KOPN) Revenues As Shares Take 56% Pounding

Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ:KOPN) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 56% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 19% in that time.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Kopin may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.1x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Kopin's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Kopin hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Kopin would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 15%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 13% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 45%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Kopin's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

The southerly movements of Kopin's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Kopin's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
