Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ:KOPN) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 66% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 41% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, Kopin may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.7x and even P/S higher than 12x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Kopin's Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Kopin's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Kopin would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 15%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 9.7% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 19% during the coming year according to the four analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 40% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that Kopin's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

Kopin's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Kopin maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
