ACM Research's (NASDAQ:ACMR) 21% CAGR outpaced the company's earnings growth over the same three-year period
By buying an index fund, investors can approximate the average market return. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, ACM Research, Inc. (NASDAQ:ACMR) shareholders have seen the share price rise 79% over three years, well in excess of the market return (60%, not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 13%.
On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
ACM Research was able to grow its EPS at 54% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 21% is actually lower than the EPS growth. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on ACM Research's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
A Different Perspective
ACM Research shareholders have received returns of 13% over twelve months, which isn't far from the general market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 0.1%. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. Is ACM Research cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
