Shareholders in Foot Locker (NYSE:FL) have lost 47%, as stock drops 11% this past week
Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. That downside risk was realized by Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE:FL) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 47%. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 20%. Notably, shareholders had a tough run over the longer term, too, with a drop of 43% in the last three years. Furthermore, it's down 27% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.
With the stock having lost 11% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year Foot Locker saw its earnings per share drop below zero. Buyers no doubt think it's a temporary situation, but those with a nose for quality have low tolerance for losses. Of course, if the company can turn the situation around, investors will likely profit.

A Different Perspective
Investors in Foot Locker had a tough year, with a total loss of 47%, against a market gain of about 20%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 7% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
